The all-new Toyota Yaris supermini has been crowned European Car of the Year 2021.
The fourth-generation Yaris, which is only available as a petrol-electric hybrid, scored 266 points and beat six other short-listed cars.
The runner up was the 100% electric Fiat 500 (240 points), which just pipped the Cupra Formentor (239).
The Volkswagen ID 3 (224), Skoda Octavia (199), Land Rover Defender (164) and Citroen C4 (143) completed the list.
It’s the second time a Yaris has won the award – the first-generation was named Car of the Year in 2000.
Selected by a jury of 59 automotive journalists from across Europe, the latest Yaris’s hybrid electric technology was praised for its smooth driving, low emissions and accessible price point.
It was also recognised for its design, dynamic performance and class-leading safety.
Furthermore, the jury particularly appreciated Toyota’s success in re-igniting passion for the hot hatch market across Europe with the launch of the GR Yaris.
