Milestone as 10 millionth Ford Mustang is built

Ford has been celebrating the production of the 10 millionth Mustang at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

The landmark model was a 460 horsepower Wimbledon White GT V8 six-speed convertible – a tribute to the first ever Mustang V8 from 1964 which was painted in the same colour, though it made do with 164 horsepower and a three-speed gearbox.

Ford has sold more than 7,000 Mustangs in the UK since it first went on sale officially in 2016, and some 38,000 across Europe during the same period.

The Mustang is also claimed to be America’s best-selling sports car of the last 50 years and the world’s best-selling sports car three years in a row.

“Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world,” said Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company.

“I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”

Such has been the new ‘Stang’s success, the special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt – unveiled earlier this year and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Steve McQueen movie – has now sold out its production run for the year in the UK.
