Vauxhall have always been associated with good quality saloon cars, the Carlton in its day was one of the leaders in the class, while Cavalier and Vectra were the businessman’s staple diet. The Vauxhall Insignia looks like recreating the legend as it becomes one of the most popular saloon cars on the market.
The VXR model has quite a sporty look to it, nice lines and deep bumpers that have heavy meshed intakes set into them. When purchased with the apron, matt exhausts and 20-inch alloys it really stands out.
The interior as well has been given the special touch, deep comfortable Recaro seats, classic badged steering wheel and matching gear stick, when the sports button is engaged the dash goes from being lit a crystal white to a flame hot red. The practicalities of using the Insignia VXR have also been well thought through, with 500 litres storage space the boot is one of the largest around. Its interior room is equally accommodating with plenty of leg room for the rear seat passengers.
Like all big saloons the Insignia does have higher running costs and offers 33mpg when driven conservatively. The 2.8 litre, V6 turbo four wheel drive engine puts plenty of power onto the road, smoothly reaching 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. Vauxhall provides all their ranges with electronic windows, remote central locking and climate control but with the Insignia they include a good quality sat nav system, electronic park brake.
The Vauxhall Insignia outsold its rival’s last year and looks set to continue in popularity through this year. Starting prices at £17,120 make it an affordable big family car with lots of comfort for the long distance businessman.
