Nissan Turning Over a New Leaf

Nissan, with the release of the Nissan Leaf are the first car manufacturer to construct a green, electric car that can be mass produced, looks like an actual car and is affordable to the general public. Nissan have a lot riding on this totally new car and one, which, if successful, will totally change attitudes in car production.

The Leaf is aimed at challenging the VW Golf and Ford Focus market so there is going to be some stiff competition and at a starting price of £23,350 it’s not going to be the cheapest car in the sector. Advocates of the brave move do point out that the increased savings on fuel, with electricity being about five times cheaper than petrol and diesel, will mean owners will recoup the costs in around three years.

Nissan claim the Leaf can go from 0-60mph in 11.5 seconds and reach speeds of 90 mph. It produces a smooth acceleration and a silent drive. So silent in fact that Nissan have fitted a noise system that produces a jet engine like whine to warn pedestrians of the cars approach.

The new Lithium batteries fully charged will give drivers around 100 miles travel which should cover most drivers daily use and then need to be recharged overnight. There is also an eco button, which dampens down acceleration and air-con effectively saving power and extending the range.

The Leaf is a stylish well thought out car, with an interesting dashboard arrangement and many new experiences for users to enjoy. No gears, low noise, programmable starting tone. If you are looking for a green, cheap to run car for daily urban travel the Leaf should cover your expectations.
